Performing Patents Otherwise: Archival conversations with 320,000 clothing inventions

Performing Patents Otherwise is one of several experimental book pilot projects conducted by the experimental publishing group at the Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs project. In the spirit of open infrastructures, we documented the publication process for each pilot book. Towards this end, the experimental publishing group curated the Experimental Publishing Compendium, which collates experimental book publishing tools and practices and examples of experimental scholarly publications. While we share some insights on the making of experimental scholarly books in the compendium, we will zoom in here on what it takes to make database books and Performing Patents Otherwise in particular.
In the Compendium, we categorised Performing Patents Otherwise as a database book. We define database books as books containing a dynamically searchable database within their pages; or books generated from a database. In ‘making of,’ we reflect on the making Performing Patents Otherwise in the hope that it will be helpful to other authors and publishers who are experimenting with database books.

Vegetation of planet Earth: Researchers publish unique database as open access

It’s a treasure trove of data: The global geodatabase of vegetation plots “sPlotOpen” is now freely accessible. It contains data on vegetation from 114 countries and from all climate zones on Earth. The database was compiled by an international team of researchers led by Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Researchers around the world finally have a balanced, representative dataset of the Earth’s vegetation at their disposal, as the team reports in the journal Global Ecology & Biogeography.

“A new study finds that papers with data shared in public gene expression archives received increased numbers of citations for at least five years. The large size of the study allowed the researchers to exclude confounding factors that have plagued prior studies of the effect and to spot a trend of increasing dataset reuse over time. The findings will be important in persuading scientists that they can benefit directly from publicly sharing their data.

The study, which adds to growing evidence for an open data citation benefit across different scientific fields, is entitled “Data reuse and the open citation advantage”. It was conducted by Dr. Heather Piwowar of Duke University and Dr. Todd Vision of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and published today in PeerJ, a peer reviewed open access journal in which all articles are freely available to everyone….”

Open access meta-analysis for psychotherapy research

Use the link to access pay-per-view options for the article published in PsycNET. [Abstract] Meta-analysis has played a key role in psychotherapy research for nearly 40 years. There is now an opportunity for technology to assist with transparent and open meta-analyses. The authors describe an open-access database of effect sizes and a corresponding web application for performing meta-analyses, viewing the database, and downloading effect sizes. The initial databases provide effect sizes for family therapy for delinquency studies and for alliance-outcome correlations in individual psychotherapy. Disciplinary norms about data sharing and openness are shifting. Furthermore, meta-analyses of behavioral interventions have been criticized for lacking transparency and openness. The database and web application are aimed at facilitating data sharing and improving the transparency of meta-analyses. The authors conclude with a discussion of future directions for the database. EASY ACCESS TO OPEN ACCESS: INTEGRATION OF OPEN ACCESS PUBLICATIONS INTO THE EZB LINKING SERVICE

[ABSTRACT] Fast and easy access to electronic resources plays a key role in academic library services. Since 1997 the University Library of Regensburg has been providing the Electronic Journals Library (EZB, http://ezb.ur.de), a database for academic electronic journals, which is used and collaboratively maintained by more than 600 libraries. The bibliographic metadata and holdings information for e-journals of the EZB build the basis for the EZB Linking Service, a link resolver to check the availability of full texts of electronic journals and to offer links to journal contents in accordance with existing access rights. For several thousand journals of about 45 different publishers a direct link to the articles of e-journals with respect to permissions can be offered in such a way. The EZB Linking Service is involved in over 40 third-party systems, like library portals, internet portals, virtual libraries or specialized databases. With about 70 million requests in 2014, the EZB Linking Service is an intensively used service of the information infrastructure in Germany. However, research articles in institutional repositories, which are simultaneously published in scientific journals, are often not included in existing link resolvers. As part of a project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the extension of the EZB Linking Service to open access publications in different institutional repositories is planned to make the access to these publications easier for end users. As a result of the project, journal articles which are published parallel in institutional repositories will be integrated in the EZB Linking Service and offered to end users as alternative article links.
