SHERPA Services has joined Jisc

Staff at the Centre for Research Communications are delighted to say that we have now completed our transfer from the University of Nottingham to Jisc, to improve the long-term stability, sustainability and growth of the CRC and SHERPA Services, RoMEO, JULIET, OpenDOAR and FACT.
[…]
All of the services will continue with their current URLs and contact information, and users should see no interruption to services while we work on new developments made possible by the transfer.

The CRC says Goodbye to Peter Millington

The CRC says Goodbye and a Happy Retirement to Peter Millington.

Peter has been our Technical Development Officer since early 2006 and has been instrumental and fundamental to the design, growth, development and maintenance of the SHERPA Services run from here at the CRC at the University. These services, RoMEO, JULIET, OpenDOAR, FACT and the forthcoming REF system, are used and appreciated around the world, and take very high levels of use – (RoMEO’s API gets about 250,000 uses per day) – and at very high accuracy, which is a testament to Peter’s professionalism and abilities.

In addition, through his work at the CRC, Peter has contributed to some of the most prominent and influential Open Access initiatives and projects of the last decade, in particular the national RSP support project and the international DRIVER initiative.

Peter receiving his gifts

Peter has always been far more than a technical development person. With a PhD and an active publication record in folklore, with a background in information science and experience in the commercial world, Peter has been able to bring to bear different perspectives to every problem, every analysis and design decision, which have been invaluable and have guided the services through to their current enviable reputation.

We are very sad to see Peter go, but wish him all the very best in what promises to be an active and packed retirement.

SHERPA/FACT Extended and Simplified

SHERPA Services are pleased to announce two upgrades to SHERPA/FACT (www.sherpa.ac.uk/fact) – the tool that helps authors check if their journal complies with their funder’s open access requirements.

Firstly, we have added five new funders – Arthritis Research UK, Breast Cancer Campaign, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. These research charities are all members of COAF (Charities Open Access Fund), along with the Wellcome Trust, which was already covered by SHERPA/FACT.

Secondly, we have simplified the interface for routine use, while retaining an “advanced mode” for more complex queries. The new features include:

  • Clearer selection of funders
  • Clearer navigation between pages
  • Additional guidance in tooltips
  • Less clutter

We continue to improve SHERPA/FACT, and welcome feedback and suggestions.

Wiley

This week we have started to make changes to the entries for the publisher Wiley. Last week Wiley kindly send us a list of the majority of their journals, with their individual embargo periods.

Up until now we have had to provide a merged entry in RoMEO, that stated both the 12 months embargo for scientific, technical and medicine titles and the 24 month embargo for humanities and social science titles. Unfortunately, this could cause confusion for you, our users, who may have been unclear which title fell into which subject grouping, soemthing that is not always clear when you consider that Psychology can be both a social science and a science, depending on the area being studied.

Now that we have this list, we are in the process of updating RoMEO with this information. We have processed 150 titles so far, but hope to have the rest up soon.

Being able to provide the exact embargo period for each Wiley title, not only means that RoMEO (www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo) will be more up-to-date, but we will also be able to ensure that FACT (www.sherpa.ac.uk/fact) entries for Wiley titles will now provide more bespoke advise.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

It is that time of year again, when we all aim to take a well-earned day or two off work. As a result, SHERPA Services (RoMEO, JULIET, FACT and OpenDOAR) will be on reduced staffing from the 13th December 2013 until the 6th January 2014. All enquiries will be answered in due course.

In additional news, due to scheduled maintenance, there may be some disruption to SHERPA Services (RoMEO, JULIET, FACT and OpenDOAR) on the evening of Tuesday 17th December 2013. We apologise for any inconvenience that this causes.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Beta SHERPA/FACT Applications Programmer’s Interface Announced

SHERPA Services is pleased to announce the launch of a beta version of an application programmers’ interface (API) for SHERPA/FACT, the funders and authors compliance tool. This is available for beta testing during November 2013.

Potential Applications

SHERPA/FACT is a tool that helps authors check if a journal’s open access policies complies with the requirements of the open access policies of the research funders Research Councils UK (RCUK) and Wellcome Trust. The data on journal policies is drawn from SHERPA/RoMEO and the funders’ policies from SHERPA/JULIET. Matching the two sets of policies is quite a complex process.

The FACT website (http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/fact/) is designed for general use. However, some users may wish to customise SHERPA/FACT for their institutions, which can be achieved using the FACT API. For instance, the API would enable them to:

  • Embed FACT within their own branded web pages
  • Link to local information on open access funds, guides, policies, and advisors
  • Reformat the FACT data, for example to highlight local policies and preferences

The FACT API could also be used for statistical studies, such as checking the potential compliance of lists of journals or articles. E.g. see:

http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/documents/FACT-OR2013-2013-07-09.pptx, slides 20 to 23.

Main Features

Having specified the required funder(s), the API can be queried by journal titles or ISSNs.

The API returns FACT data for Gold (Paid OA), Green (self-archiving) and Overall compliance. There is a choice of XML (default), JSON, and PHP array output formats. In general, all computable information is returned as arguments and displayable information is returned as data. E.g.

<goldcompliance goldcompliancecode="yes" goldcompliancereport="paidoa">You can publish your article compliantly with open access</goldcompliance>

See: http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/fact/apimanual for more information and examples.

Beta Testing Invitation

We invite developers and researchers to participate in the beta testing of the FACT API. You need to register for a free SHERPA/RoMEO API Key, which you can do at:

http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/apiregistry

There is a short presentation on how to register and how to use the API key at:

http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/RoMEO-API-Keys-2011-10-04.pdf.

Feedback

Testers will be able to send us comments and report issues at any time using the FACT Feedback form. They will, however, also be asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of the testing period. All feedback will help towards getting the API ready for production release.

Production Version

We are currently investigating sustainability options for the development and support of the FACT service, including the API. We therefore do not have a date for releasing the production version. Please note that we may need to charge a subscription for use of the API production version.

We would be happy to extend SHERPA/FACT and its API to cover further research funders anywhere in the world. Interested funding bodies are invited to contact us.
