JCORE upgrades to JATS 1.3  – Highwire Press

“HighWire’s journals hosting solution JCORE can now transform XML to industry standard Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) XML version 1.3, the latest version. This means that publishers using the platform can now seamlessly comply with the specifications of this interoperable standard. 

The British Medical Journal (BMJ) is the first JCORE publisher to offer the JATS 1.3 download for all of their OA content which includes over 57,000 articles. This option may be attractive to BMJ and other publishers as the ability to download full text in a machine readable format is one of the strong recommendations made by Coalition S within the Plan S Principles and Implementation guidance for publishers. …”

NISO Announces Publication of Updated Journal Article Tag Suite—Version 1.3 | NISO website

“The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) today publishes the latest update to the JATS: Journal Article Tag Suite standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.96-2021), Version 1.3. JATS provides a common XML format in which publishers and archives can exchange journal content—both articles (text and graphics) and non-article material such as letters, editorials, and book and product reviews. The Tag Suite is the complete set of elements and attributes described in the standard. Along with these descriptions, the standard includes three implementations of the suite, called Tag Sets, which are intended to provide models for archiving, publishing, and authoring journal article content.

Version 1.3 of the standard incorporates public comments made through October 2020. The main update is the inclusion of metadata to describe the XML artifact (as opposed to the content of the article). Other changes to the standard include the addition of models for new information types, questions and answers (adopted from the Book Interchange Tag Set—BITS), new ways of describing awards and grants, and more. All changes are backward compatible with JATS 1.0. …”

Around 10,000 journals worldwide and over a thousand journals published in Europe use Open Journal Systems. The latest major version OJS 3 was released in 2016, and since then hundreds of OJS journals have upgraded including large national journal platforms like Tidsskrift.dk and Journal.fi.Therefore, it is important to help the growing number of OJS 3 journals to become compliant with the OpenAIRE infrastructure in terms of comprehensive metadata descriptions of open access articles on research in Europe and beyond….”
