“We’re delighted to announce a new partnership between CORE and Arabic Digital Reform Institute (ADRI), providing services to researchers to store, share and access Arabic academia online. 

The partnership will provide ADRI with unlimited access to millions of open access articles to provide research platform and repository services to academics all over the world. 

ADRI is a social enterprise from New Zealand and Bahrain that aspires to revolutionise the current practices in creating knowledge in Arabic. In doing so, ADRI aims to address the social issue of limited availability of Arabic scientific content online. Arabic academia is currently dispersed across many locations, ADRI aims to share knowledge and consolidate Arabic academia into one online platform allowing academia to grow. 

 

Using CORE’s API, ADRI will search the largest database of open access content — 210 million metadata records and counting — to bring and translate Arabic content to their users. In gathering this open access data from CORE, ADRI will be accessing the most up-to-date research content to help share and translate knowledge, and grow Arabic academia which is key for global development….”

APIv3: Announcing a new API to access CORE data – Research

“Since the start (10 years ago!) CORE’s mission has been to aggregate and facilitate access to open access scientific research at an unprecedented scale to both humans and machines. To achieve this aim, we are always refining and improving our methods for access and use of the CORE data. …

“Hello, and welcome to the June issue of the Open Research Quarterly Update (Digest). Here in the Open Research Services team at Jisc our mission is to help members embrace the benefits of open research by removing barriers, embedding open practices and developing open infrastructure. Much of our focus across Jisc involves working with the sector to negotiate agreements and develop services which underpin open research. This quarter’s update includes numerous examples of this in action.

Publications Router continues to expand its publishers’ contributions, while the Sherpa team have developed a new dataset which will provide details of Transitional Agreements to our users. In addition, Jisc Collections have been working with SCONUL to provide the Unsub dashboard. This month sees the first meeting of the Research Identifier National Coordinating Council (RINCC) on 21st June, which will coincide with the publication of a Cost Benefit Analysis Report, funded by the UK Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) for Open Access project….”

Open search tools need sustainable funding – Research Professional News

“The Covid-19 pandemic has triggered an explosion of knowledge, with more than 200,000 papers published to date. At one point last year, scientific output on the topic was doubling every 20 days. This huge growth poses big challenges for researchers, many of whom have pivoted to coronavirus research without experience or preparation.

Mainstream academic search engines are not built for such a situation. Tools such as Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science provide long, unstructured lists of results with little context.

These work well if you know what you are looking for. But for anyone diving into an unknown field, it can take weeks, even months, to identify the most important topics, publication venues and authors. This is far too long in a public health emergency.

The result has been delays, duplicated work, and problems with identifying reliable findings. This lack of tools to provide a quick overview of research results and evaluate them correctly has created a crisis in discoverability itself. …

Building on these, meta-aggregators such as Base, Core and OpenAIRE have begun to rival and in some cases outperform the proprietary search engines. …”

CORE and PubMed collaborate for further full text dissemination – Research

“CORE provides access to freely available full text papers which were previously  unavailable in PubMed to enhance the experience of PubMed users. This is delivered via the LinkOut service. 

PubMed is maintained by the US National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. It constitutes the largest citations database in health sciences and is one of the most widely used scholarly infrastructure services with millions of monthly active users.

We are happy to announce that hundreds of thousands of relevant articles hosted in CORE are now linked from PubMed, taking  more  available content directly to the researchers.   

Currently, many PubMed records offer metadata information and the full text may not be available. This development now enables PubMed users to access full text links to articles hosted in CORE via its LinkOut service, providing researchers with a direct route to the research. The linking of CORE papers directly from PubMed resources and other related databases further increases the discoverability of content aggregated by CORE, providing a valuable service to our repositories.  …”

CORE reaches 30 million visits per month – Jisc scholarly communications

“CORE has reached a new milestone of 30 million monthly active users. This follows already significant growth of CORE’s user base in 2020, as we only reported achieving 20 million monthly users in June 2020. 

This usage growth is also reflected in a substantial improvement of CORE’s Alexa Global Rank. As of November 1, 2020, CORE is listed among the top 2,000 websites by user engagement, calculated from a combination of daily visitors and page views on a website over the last 90 days. In the beginning of December, CORE achieved 1,528 positions on the rank. …”

Open Access Helper is designed to make finding the best Open Access location easy. Whenever my app comes across a DOI, it will query the APIs of unpaywall.org & core.ac.uk to see if an Open Access copy is available elsewhere.

The App is free and Open Source and I have no intention to change that….”

Tool to Support with REF2021 Open Access Compliance has been released in the New Version of the CORE Repository Dashboard – CORE

“CORE is happy to announce the release of a new version of the CORE Repository Dashboard. The update will be of particular interest to UK repositories as we are releasing with it a new tool to support REF2021 open access compliance assessment. “A large proportion of  CORE development resources were directed to the release of a new version of the CORE Repository Dashboard. Access to the standard CORE Dashboard is freely available to every CORE data provider. The CORE Repository Dashboard received a brand-new design, user-friendly interface and a number of new features, developed for repository managers and research administrators, to help them improve the harvesting of their repository outputs and ensure their content is visible to the world. The update will be of particular interest to UK repositories, as we have released with it a new tool to support REF2021 open access compliance assessment….
