Fostering open science to research using a taxonomy and an eLearning portal | Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Knowledge Technologies and Data-driven Business

Abstract:  The term “Open Science” is recently widely used, but it is still unclear to many research stakeholders – funders, policy makers, researchers, administrators, librarians and repository managers – how Open Science can be achieved. FOSTER (Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research) is a European Commission funded project, which is developing an e-learning portal to support the training of a wide range of stakeholders in Open Science and related areas. In 2014 the FOSTER project co-funded 28 training activities in Open Science, which include more than 110 events, while in 2015 the project has supported 24 community training events in 18 countries. In this paper, we describe the FOSTER approach in structuring the Open Science domain for educational purposes, present the functionality of the FOSTER training portal and discuss its use and potential for training the key stakeholders using self-learning and blended-learning methods.

Sharing their experience and skills of imparting Open Science principles, the authors (see below) produced an open knowledge and educational resource oriented to practical teaching. The focus of the new handbook is not spreading the ideas of Open Science, but showing how to spread these ideas most effectively. The form of a book sprint as a collaborative writing process maximized creativity and innovation, and ensured the production of a valuable resource in just a few days.

Bringing together methods, techniques, and practices, the handbook aims at supporting educators of Open Science. The result is intended as a helpful guide on how to forward knowledge on Open Science principles to our networks, institutions, colleagues, and students. It will instruct and inspire trainers how to create high quality and engaging trainings. Addressing challenges and giving solutions, it will strengthen the community of Open Science trainers who are educating, informing, and inspiring themselves….”

Release of the FOSTER Open Science toolkit | FOSTER

“FOSTER Plus developed a set of ten free online courses covering key topics of Open Science. Each course takes about one hour to complete and a badge is awarded after successful completion. You will need to create a free account on the FOSTER portal if you wish to claim your badge but the courses can also be accessed without registration if no badge is desired. The order you take the courses in is not important, the system tracks your progress regardless and you can claim the badge as soon you completed each of the suggested courses. However, we recommend starting with “What is Open Science?” as an introduction. The draft courses were released for public consultation during the summer and have been refined based on community feedback. …”

Open Access Week 2018 is almost here (October 22nd to 26th) and FOSTER and OpenAIRE are once again joining forces for a new series of webinars and tutorials!

 

In this year’s interactive, mixed approach, you’ll have the chance to subscribe to dedicated ‘tracks’, each of which involves reviewing 1 or 2 short online tutorials along with some supporting information. We’ll even throw in an old-fashioned webinar here and there!

You can subscribe to one (or all!) of these tracks and we’ll provide you with all relevant information you need the week starting October 15th. You can browse the tutorials and learning materials at your own pace, and then bring any questions you might have to dedicated Q&A sessions during Open Access Week. We’ll have a range of Open Science experts on hand to help answer your questions.
