EarthArXiv announces new partnership with California Digital Library to host earth sciences preprint service – Office of Scholarly Communication

“The Advisory Council of the EarthArXiv preprint service for earth sciences is pleased to announce a partnership with the California Digital Library (CDL) that will support EarthArXiv’s mission, future growth, and long-term sustainability. Core to this partnership will be the transition of EarthArXiv’s preprints server – including public display and submission management – from the Center for Open Science to the eScholarship Publishing program at the CDL.

CDL will host EarthArXiv using Janeway, an open source publishing platform developed by the Centre for Technology and Publishing and the Open Library of Humanities at Birkbeck University of London. EarthArXiv’s Advisory Council will maintain ownership and control over the preprint server, while the eScholarship Publishing team will contribute to the development, support, and maintenance of the Janeway platform.

Since its founding, EarthArXiv has partnered with the Center for Open Science to host its content online. Recently, however, financial considerations made it necessary for the Advisory Council to explore alternative hosting partners. “After several organizations stepped up to offer new partnerships (for which EarthArXiv will always be grateful), the Advisory Council voted unanimously to partner with the team at the California Digital Library,” said Bruce Caron, one of the founders of EarthArXiv….”

Janeway: Boldly Going Where No Platform Has Gone Before

“This session, run by the Open Library of Humanities, introduces the Janeway publishing platform and gives a demo of its core functionality. Janeway is a journal platform designed for publishing scholarly research material. Open source and developed in the open, with a modular plugin system, this session will allow participants to meet the development team and to explore the functionality of the platform.”

“One of the strongly recommended criteria under Plan S is that journals provide “Openly accessible data on citations according to the standards by the Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC)”. This means, essentially, depositing citation data with Crossref and then marking it as open.

This is a tricky task that will be outside of the ability of many smaller publishers. It requires citations to be marked up in a format that distinguishes them from other text. However, for anyone who is producing JATS XML, I have now implemented the ability to deposit citation data in our open-source platform, Janeway….”

University of Huddersfield Press Becomes First to Use Hosted Janeway Service for Journals

“The Open Library of Humanities, Birkbeck’s Centre for Technology and Publishing, and the University of Huddersfield Press have entered into an agreement to migrate the Press’s journals to the Janeway platform.

Janeway is a modern, open-source academic publishing platform written in Python using the Django framework. It has a commitment to an easy-to-understand codebase; an aesthetically pleasing design; and top-end functionality, including a preprint server and overlay journal support. The platform only supports open-access publishing and will never incorporate paywall facilities into its code. Janeway is developed by the Centre for Technology and Publishing at Birkbeck, University of London.

Professor Martin Paul Eve, project lead on Janeway at Birkbeck, University of London, said: “We are delighted that Huddersfield University Press has become the first external Press to migrate its journals to our software platform. In this way we aim to provide a low-cost solution for external partners seeking a technological platform for their open publishing enterprises. As a result, everyone benefits from high-quality research being made openly available.” …”
