“The NRF seeks to appoint a Director on a 5-year fixed term contract within the Division for Strategy, Planning and Partnerships to lead and manage the AOSP. This individual will be joining a cohort of highly talented, knowledgeable and committed individuals.

The incumbent shall be responsible for leading the further development and implementation of the scientific and organisational objectives of the AOSP Strategy in providing effective, responsive and efficient administration and support. The incumbent will be responsible for staffing and directing the AOSP programmes based at the NRF in Pretoria, South Africa, and will take accountability to direct a proactive focus on advancing open science, data and infrastructure sharing and human capacity development, with the ultimate goal of building long-term relationships with key stakeholders….”

“The representatives of African Open Science Platform, AmeLICA, cOAlition S, OA2020, and SciELO – five of the major worldwide Open Access initiatives – met on 01 May 2019 during the annual meeting of the Global Research Council (GRC) in Sao Paulo. They are united in their common mission of making knowledge available and accessible wherever it can have the greatest impact and help solve humanity’s challenges regardless of where it was produced.

The combined effect of the five initiatives has generated a new momentum in the push towards universal, full and immediate Open Access.

The Five Initiatives jointly state that:

  • They consider that scholarly and scientific knowledge is a global public good. When generated by public funds, free access to it is a universal right.
  • They share one common ultimate objective: providing universal, unrestricted, and immediate Open Access to scholarly information, including use and re-use by humans and machines.
  • They share the belief that this common goal can be achieved through a variety of approaches.
  • They will pursue points of alignment among their approaches and ways to co-operate towards reaching the shared objective.
  • They seek an active dialogue with all stakeholders, including researchers, research funders, universities, libraries, publishers, learned societies, governments, and citizens to take into account the diversity of the global scholarly community….”

AOSP Workshop in collaboration with UbuntuNetConnect 2017: “Towards an African Open Science Platform Infrastructure Framework” – African Open Science Platform

“AOSP is proud to co-present a pre-conference workshop with the UbuntuNetConnect 2017 network on 1 November. Speakers will be focusing on skills required to not only build the necessary data infrastructure, but also the skills to generate, manage, manipulate, visualise, manage and preserve the data sets for the long term. In addition to this, we will have the opportunity to listen to ICT network experts/engineers, sharing progress made in terms of building infrastructures to accommodate the activities associated with generating, sharing and curating large volumes of data sets. This will be a very important opportunity for researchers collecting data to communicate needs in terms of data with ICT network support specialists, and vice versa….”
